Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya's Life Hangs in Balance

Indian Nurse Nimisha Priya's Life Hangs in BalanceIn a devastating blow to efforts to save Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya from execution in Yemen, the family of murder victim Talal Abdo Mahdi has categorically rejected all offers of blood money settlement, insisting instead on full enforcement of Qisas (retribution under Islamic law).

Priya's execution, initially scheduled for July 16, 2025, was postponed, providing temporary relief for the 38-year-old mother from Palakkad district. The Indian Supreme Court has scheduled the next hearing for August 14, 2025, as diplomatic efforts continue.

In a Facebook post, the victim's brother Abdelfattah Mahdi firmly rejected all reconciliation attempts, effectively dashing hopes of a pardon that could spare her from execution. Despite offers of up to $1 million in blood money, tense negotiations continue in Sana'a as her family pins hopes on a miracle.

Priya was convicted for allegedly injecting her business partner with a fatal overdose of sedatives in 2017. Her family maintains she acted in self-defence against an abusive partner who withheld her passport. Currently held in Sana'a under Houthi control, Priya's case has become a diplomatic challenge for India.

Her mother Premakumari remains in Yemen, continuing negotiations despite the victim's family's unrelenting stance. Time is running out for the Indian nurse as legal options narrow dramatically.
